There's one question that no music producing channel dares to answer about making beats and that's "What if I want to make Memorex by b.michaael"

I like that snare. I also like random sounds on production. I don't like when a beat is too clean.

the thing about these rejected beats stories is, its way more rejected beats than u would think really i got the chance to work with a producer who has a few notable young thug placements and he told me about this session he had with thug where he fulled up with legit 50 brand new beats after working all month to make a pack. and they just sat for a half hour and flipped through the folder. if thug didnt say anything by the time the first drum loop ended, it was a miss. time to skip to the next beat the way the story goes. homie flipped through the whole pack and was getting hella nervous. thug didnt pick anything until the legit *last* beat in the folder now if any of those other beats get a placement they can say they're "rejected thug beats" haha

I became a hip hop head in '98, my senior year in high school. I grew up a indie / punk rock kid, and I remember thinking that the beat for My Name Is sounded unlike anything else I had heard in rap. 25 (!) years later and it still stands alone. This video does a great job of digging into why that is.

I've been creating music with a computer since my Amiga in 1990 using Protracker, this is the same gatekeeping that has gone on until about 2011ish when Dubstep started becoming heavy in the US.

To me Hip Hop is sampling. Thtas what created the sound. For a person like me it was the samples that made me wanted to know where it came from. Sampling kept the old music alive. It kept the old artist relevant. Its the greed of record companies that destroyed it. I saay to all dont be afraid of these vultures. Keep that old music alive. Cause one day your music will be old too

the title of this is this most hypocritical shit with dre as cover art. DID YOU EVEN SEE NWA? DO YOU REMEMBER WHO THE BEASTIE BOYS ARE, OR, FOR THAT MATTER, RICK ROSS? DID KANYE NOT KANYE? THE BEAUTY OF USING SAMPLES IS REFLECTION AND REFRACTION OF ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION LEADING TO NEW GENRES AND PERSPECTIVE POTENTIALS TO EXPERIENCE. If producers hated sampling, splice wouldnt exist, and people wouldnt SAMPLE live sounds like foley, creating a massive deficit in creative ways to express a scene, or feeling in music or as a way to connect to the audience in a tangible way. Improv uses props. why tf wouldnt a producer use a sample. would you measure an inch without a ruler? samples are just frames of reference, within contextual use. Not being creative with a sample is just being a bad producer. youd dislike if someone used or represented your art poorly. fair. but thats hating being misrepresented not sampling

I have been an electronic and dubstep/riddim producer for 11 years. It's actually shocking how easy it is to make a modern hip hop or trap beat. It does not require any kind of thought or creativity to do. I could make 25 trap beats in one day without ever stuttering. I feel like beats in older hip hop were really thought out and took genuine care to make. Think Dre or Dj Premier. Finding exactly the right samples and being genuinely creative. Now those kinds of beats take a lot of creativity and care. Idk if im just trippin, but im very tired of hearing the same shit over and over and over again. Using all of the same exact five or so drum samples, throwing just any random sample on it. Absolutely horrendous mixing. Its really a shame because you can do basically infinite things with it in a DAW, but they always choose to do the same uninspired shit. There are literally infinite opportunities to make something new in the software, but they choose to not do that.

I am into minute 5 of watching and had to stop to comment. You did a really great job with this brother! Timbaland was and still is a musical idol for me. He had a big influence on finding my own style and developing it. My friends knew how fascinated I was by his music and as a teenager I was even called Mbaland because of my first name. Hope to work with him one day and maybe also have an impact on the upcoming generations of producers. Thanks again, it was really informative and entertaining!

Terror Squad used The same sample as Chance way back in 2004 on The song «take me home» and that was a major release with a sample clearance team.. so seems weird to me that chance couldnt put out an interpolation

at the same time you have creative unique producers coming out of the TDE camp. Sounwave is one of the most underrated producers. the stuff he did with Kendrick over the years is going down some of the best hip hop production ever. Tae beast, willie. b, sounwave, and Dj Dahi, are in a whole other level

I feel like there's a grace period you should give....also stop going for old number ones. It's different if you have close connects and ties. You only asking for trouble otherwise. You really have to be in a situation where people will shell out money to see that record all the way through. Don't get me wrong nothing wrong with roots of nostalgia....but like nav said put some work in too. We don't want to hear 90% of what someone else already did with 10% of a subtle change. You'll often hear there was nothing wrong with the original.

I think this misses the point of the genre of Hip Hop in general. Everyone can make hip hop on your phone. Its kinda like country or blues. You can write a million songs with 3 chords. You can rap about everything with 4 beats and no samples. You just need that reference to paint the vibe.

  • @gregorywilliams2962

Timbaland is my GOAT producer of all time. His sound is so distinctive. When i hear a Timbaland beat, I instinctively know its a Timbaland beat. Don't get me wrong Neptunes, Kanye, Scott Storch, Dr.Dre are all cool, but they don't come close to Timbo in my opinion.

Fl made millionaire's. I remember i used fl, and it paved the way for the mpc i got today. I remember arab, kanye as well as ninth wonder back in the day. I couldnt afford a mpc until this year 17 years later. My greatest beats were made on fl even chopping samples in edison. Not what you got how you use it. I learned how to use my equalizers on my beats learning mids, highs lows. I still use both. My homy is still colder than me , and he still uses fl. He thinks my shit on mpc goes hard believe in yourself 😮
